Adhesive-lined dual-wall heat shrink: how the seal works
The hot-melt inner wall flows into voids during shrink, passing IP67/IP68 submersion that single-wall fails.

Single-wall heat shrink insulates. Dual-wall adhesive-lined tubing seals - the inner hot-melt layer flows during shrinking, fills the voids between the tube and the substrate, and makes the joint effectively waterproof. For outdoor, underground, marine and high-humidity duty, that difference is the specification.

The construction

Dual-wall tubing is an outer wall of cross-linked polyolefin with a co-extruded inner layer of hot-melt adhesive. When heated, the outer wall recovers and the adhesive melts and flows into every gap - around terminal barrels, over braid, into the strands of a crimp. The result is a continuous, moisture-tight envelope rather than a film that merely touches the surface.

What the adhesive layer does

  • Waterproofing: sealed joints pass IP67/IP68 submersion testing that single-wall joints fail
  • Corrosion control: no moisture path to the copper means no oxidation at the crimp
  • Mechanical grip: the adhesive bonds the tube to the substrate, so it resists pull-off and vibration
  • Strain relief: the bonded, thickened section at a connector entry spreads bending stress over a longer length
  • Chemical barrier: the adhesive film blocks many contaminants that would otherwise creep under the tube

Where dual-wall is specified

  • Outdoor cable joints and terminations exposed to rain and condensation
  • Underground and tunnel installations where water ingress is a matter of when, not if
  • Marine and offshore harnesses, bilge areas and deck wiring
  • Motor lead connections and anything that sees wash-down
  • Battery interconnects where a short is a safety event, not a service event

When single-wall is enough

In dry indoor panels, harnesses and low-voltage electronics, single-wall tubing is the correct, cheaper choice - there is nothing to seal against. Specifying dual-wall everywhere just adds cost and makes the harness stiffer than it needs to be.

Installation notes

  • Heat until the adhesive visibly flows out at both ends of the tube - that is the proof the seal is complete
  • Do not overheat: burning the outer wall destroys the moisture seal even though the tube still looks shrunk
  • Use the correct shrink ratio (3:1 typical) so the adhesive has a gap to fill; a 2:1 tube over a small substrate leaves voids

If the joint has to survive submersion or years of humidity, the adhesive-lined tube is not an upgrade - it is the minimum correct spec.
