Fluoropolymer heat shrink temperature is the spec engineers most often get wrong — not because the materials are complicated, but because heat shrink tubing has *two* temperature numbers that mean completely different things, and a third that nobody writes down until it fails. PTFE, FEP and PFA heat shrink tubing each recover at one temperature, serve continuously at another, and tolerate peaks in between. This guide explains the fluoropolymer heat shrink temperature landscape for the three materials, when to specify each, and the selection table we use at the quotation desk. The first thing the fluoropolymer heat shrink temperature table shows: recovery temperature and service temperature are different numbers on every row. The second: FEP is the odd one out, recovering at 180–200 °C while PTFE and PFA need 300 °C+.

The spec error we see weekly: "PTFE tubing rated 350 °C". A 350 °C *recovery* temperature is being read as a 350 °C *service* rating. Peaks above service temperature are tolerated only for short excursions — minutes, not hours — and depend on wall thickness and environment. When in doubt, put the actual thermal profile (continuous temperature, peaks, frequency) in the enquiry; the fluoropolymer heat shrink temperature spec should be written from the profile, not from a single number.
Recovery: 300–400 °C (PTFE), 180–200 °C (FEP), 300–375 °C (PFA). Service: -200 °C to +260 °C (PTFE and PFA), -200 °C to +200 °C (FEP). Recovery is an installation parameter; service is the rating that matters.
PTFE's fluoropolymer heat shrink temperature window is the widest: -200 °C to +260 °C continuous. Its 300–400 °C recovery temperature is applied once during installation and is not a service rating.
FEP's melt temperature is lower (~260 °C) than PTFE's, so its recovery window sits at 180–200 °C — which also means standard heat guns work for installation.
Only for short-term peaks, application-dependent. Continuous service above 260 °C is outside the fluoropolymer heat shrink family entirely.
PFA — it matches PTFE's temperature class, is melt-bondable into leak-free assemblies, and has the high-purity profile semiconductor processes require.
No — the finished part's properties depend on the material and wall, not on the temperature used to shrink it, provided recovery stayed inside the window. Overheating can degrade the wall, so stay within the published range.
A hot-air tool rated for 300 °C+ with even airflow. A polyolefin-rated heat gun will not bring PTFE or PFA to recovery.
