15kV Cold Shrink Cable Accessories

Pre-expanded silicone terminations and joints for 8.7/15kV MV networks. No heat, no open flame, installed by pulling the support core.

15kV cold shrink termination on XLPE MV cable

15kV cold shrink accessories cover 8.7/15kV medium-voltage cable terminations and straight joints for XLPE-insulated distribution and sub-transmission. Each part ships pre-expanded on a removable plastic core. On site you slide it over the prepared cable and pull the core; the rubber recovers by elastic memory and grips the jacket with constant radial pressure. There is no torch, no hot-air gun, and no skill-dependent heating step.

That matters on the jobs where these parts are actually used. Renewable collector systems, data-center MV switchrooms and urban utility spurs all share the same constraints: no open flame in confined spaces, inconsistent installer skill, and a hard requirement that the seal hold against moisture ingress for the life of the joint. The build integrates a stress-control layer and a factory-fitted seal, so the field outcome depends far less on who is holding the tool.

Applications by industry

Why cold shrink for 15kV MV distribution

At 15kV the failure mode is partial discharge at the stress concentration where the insulation screen ends. A cold-shrink termination carries a factory-formed stress-control geometry, so you are not relying on the installer to tape or mould it in the field. Against heat-shrink, the advantage is the absence of a heat source: in a cable trench, a packed switchroom or an explosive-atmosphere site, that removes a real hazard and a real skill variable. The trade is material cost and a tighter fit to the specified cable OD.

Not suitable above the rated 15kV class -- for 20kV and 35kV duty use the 20kV or 35kV cold-shrink lines. Silicone variants are chosen where continuous temperature or weather exposure is the limiting factor; confirm the duty before specifying.

Stress control and installation review

Stress control is built into the tube, but the joint still depends on cable preparation. Confirm the insulation-screen cutoff length against the body, measure the cable outer diameter (not just the conductor size) for body selection, and check that the kit covers the full conductor range you stock. Verify the core pull direction and that no lubricant remains on the contact surfaces.

Order by cable outer diameter and insulation type, not by conductor cross-section alone. A body selected on conductor size only will not seat correctly on a large-OD cable.

Inspection and traceability

We state the control plan with you. Batch traceability links the raw rubber lot to the finished part and the test record.

Common questions

What cable sizes does the 15kV kit cover?

Bodies are selected by cable outer diameter and insulation type, typically 25 mm2 to 630 mm2 copper or aluminium XLPE. Send the cable OD and we confirm the body.

Does it need a heat gun?

No. Cold shrink is recovered by removing the internal support core. No torch or hot-air source is used.

How is partial discharge controlled at 15kV?

The stress-control layer is moulded into the termination body at manufacture, so field PD performance does not depend on installer taping.

What standards apply?

IEEE 404 and IEC 60502-4 are the common reference points; EN 50393 and GB/T 12706 apply for European and Chinese projects.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes. EPDM and silicone versions are rated for outdoor and buried service; confirm UV and temperature class for the site.
