Mylar / PET film insulation tube

Mylar (PET) film tubes are the general-purpose thin-wall insulation sleeve: good dielectric strength, easy to cut and form, and cheap enough to use in volume on motors, transformers and coils. They are the cost-down answer when a design currently calls for Nomex, polyimide or PTFE but the duty does not need that material's temperature or chemical ceiling.

The application split is by component: motor-winding and compressor-motor insulation, transformer lead and coil insulation, relay and solenoid sleeving, and any assembly where a thin, consistent, inexpensive dielectric sleeve is enough. We develop it as a material-substitution motion -- show us the current Nomex/PI/PTFE spec and we size a PET tube that meets the electrical need at lower cost.

Applications by industry

Why PET film tube as a cost-down

When the limiting requirement is dielectric insulation at moderate temperature, PET film does the job Nomex, polyimide or PTFE do -- at a fraction of the material cost. It cuts cleanly, holds a consistent thin wall, and is available in the small, mixed-size batches that motor and transformer makers actually order. The trade is temperature and chemical ceiling: where the duty runs hot or aggressive, step up to PI or PTFE.

Do not substitute PET for PI or PTFE where continuous temperature or chemical exposure exceeds PET limits. Run a substitution only against the electrical and thermal spec, not the name on the drawing.

Wall consistency and assembly review

The usual defect is a wall that varies along the length or a tube that cracks on assembly. We hold wall consistent, deburr the cut, and size ID/OD to the wire or lead so the sleeve slides on without splitting. Specify the wire or lead diameter and the length; we confirm the tube size.

Specify inner diameter and wall together. A PET tube quoted only by outer diameter may crack on a lead it is too tight for.

Inspection and traceability

We state the control plan with you. Batch traceability links the film lot to the finished tube and the inspection record.
